Pearls, but make them fancy.

The Variegated String of Pearls takes one of our favourite trailing succulents and gives it a gorgeous little upgrade. Its delicate, bead-like leaves are marbled with creamy white and soft green, sometimes developing a subtle blush of pink when grown in bright light.

Those beautiful pearl-covered stems tumble over the edges of hanging pots and shelves, creating a cascading display that's every bit as unusual as it looks. A little more particular than its all-green cousin, but absolutely worth making room for.

And yes, those pearls are real leaves. Clever, isn't it?

Plant Care

  • Light: Loves plenty of bright, indirect light, with a little gentle morning sunshine. Good light helps maintain its beautiful variegation, but avoid prolonged harsh afternoon sun.
  • Watering: Allow the compost to dry out thoroughly between waterings. Its pearl-shaped leaves store water, making overwatering its biggest enemy.
  • Temperature: Happiest around 18–24°C. Protect from cold draughts, frost and temperatures below 10°C.
  • Humidity: Normal household humidity is ideal. No misting or extra humidity required.
  • Feed: Feed sparingly with a diluted cactus and succulent fertiliser during spring and summer.

Good To Know

Bright, Indirect Light

Loves being in the spotlight. Thrives on attention. Just not direct sunlight, that’s where it draws the line. We’re glowing, not grilling.

A Little Bit Diva

This botanical buddy won't just up and die on you if it isn't happy. It'll let you know it needs a bit of fuss and attention, which it will, periodically. Check the care details.

Not for Pets or Kids

Beautiful but with a dark side. The leaves and/or other parts of this plant can be toxic. Keep away from pets, children and adults who never grew up.

How not to kill your Variegated String of Pearls (Senecio rowleyanus ‘Variegatus’)

We've created a personalised Grow Guide for your Variegated String of Pearls (Senecio rowleyanus ‘Variegatus’). Just follow this easy guide and you & your new leafy mate will be loving life together!

Light: Direct

I love the light! A big ol' dose of bright, sunlight each day is my idea of heaven. I'm even up for some direct rays, just as long as it's not a scorcher. That said, I'm pretty adaptable. If light or dappled shade is all you've got, I won't complain.

Watering: Light

When it comes to drinking,I'm a Lizzie Lightweight, the cheapest date in town! Just a small one for me, please, and don't be rushing to top me up either. I won't thank you for it. Allow my soil to dry out almost completely between waterings, and we'll get on just fine.

Humidity: Normal

Atmospherics? I'm really not that bothered, actually. Just your everyday household humidity is fine. No extra attention required, thanks, so don't be comin' at me with that spritzer!

Memento Top Tip 💡

Here's the trick with String of Pearls: don't just look at the hanging strands — pay attention to the top of the pot!

Those little pearls growing around the crown need plenty of light too. Keep it somewhere bright enough to reach the top of the plant, and you'll encourage fuller, healthier growth rather than long strands with a bare patch in the middle.

And when it comes to watering? If the pearls are still firm and plump, there's usually no need to reach for the watering can.

Diva Rating ✨

6 / 10 — MOOD

A little fussier than your average succulent, particularly when it comes to getting the light and watering balance right. But find its happy place, resist the urge to overwater, and it'll reward you with those gorgeous trailing pearls.

A Little Note About Your Pearls 🌿

Just like nature intended, no two plants are exactly alike! The length and fullness of trailing strands will vary from plant to plant, as will the amount, pattern and intensity of variegation. Some pearls may be greener, others creamier, with occasional hints of pink.

Product images are for illustration, and your plant may differ slightly from those pictured. That's part of what makes each one unique!
