Now that's a leaf worth showing off.

The Iron Cross Begonia isn't your average houseplant. With its apple-green leaves, chocolate-brown cross-shaped markings and wonderfully crinkled texture, it's a proper little work of art. Even the fuzzy edges have personality.

Originally from the tropical forests of Asia, this unusual Begonia is all about the foliage. Give it a warm, sheltered spot with plenty of indirect light and a little extra humidity, and it'll bring something completely different to your indoor jungle.

Plant Care

  • Light: Loves bright, indirect light. Keep away from harsh direct sunshine, which can scorch those beautiful leaves.
  • Watering: Keep the soil lightly moist during active growth, allowing the surface to dry slightly between drinks. Avoid soggy compost and reduce watering in winter.
  • Temperature: Happiest in a warm room, ideally around 18–24°C. Protect from cold draughts and temperatures below 13°C.
  • Humidity: Appreciates higher humidity, but avoid misting directly onto the fuzzy foliage. A humidifier works brilliantly.
  • Feed: Feed with a diluted foliage houseplant fertiliser during spring and summer, following the product instructions.

  • Pet Warning: Toxic to cats and dogs if eaten, particularly the underground parts

  • Origin: Southern China and Vietnam

Total Diva

This is a green goddess and you better be prepared to treat it as such! Nobody puts Baby in the corner! be prepared to dish out some regular leaf love!

Bright, Indirect Light

Loves being in the spotlight. Thrives on attention. Just not direct sunlight, that’s where it draws the line. We’re glowing, not grilling.

Not for Pets or Kids

Beautiful but with a dark side. The leaves and/or other parts of this plant can be toxic. Keep away from pets, children and adults who never grew up.

How not to kill your Iron Cross Begonia (Begonia Masoniana)

We've created a personalised Grow Guide for your Iron Cross Begonia (Begonia Masoniana). Just follow this easy guide and you & your new leafy mate will be loving life together!

Light: Indirect

I'm pretty flexible, actually. Generally I'd rather be in a bright spot, with plenty of indirect light. But if all you've got is a moderately shady corner, that's no biggie I'll happily adapt with perhaps a bit less watering. Just keep me out of any harsh, direct sun and we'll get on just fine.

Watering: Regular

I'm a Thirsty Kirsty! I could drink most other plants under the table and still throw shapes on the dancefloor. Don't let me dry out or there'll be trouble, but remember, the art of drinking is slow & steady. Too much, too quick isn't good for any of us. Keep my soil moist but not soggy.

Humidity: Normal

Atmospherics? I'm really not that bothered, actually. Just your everyday household humidity is fine. No extra attention required, thanks, so don't be comin' at me with that spritzer!

Top tips from our Agony Plant.

Memento Top Tip 💡

Those fuzzy, textured leaves might look like they need a refreshing spritz, but resist the temptation! Water sitting on the foliage can encourage spotting and rot. Keep the humidity up around the plant instead, and water directly into the compost.

Diva Rating 💅

7 / 10 — DRAMA

A little particular about moisture, warmth and humidity, but nothing a confident plant parent can't handle. Get its spot right and let those fabulous leaves do the talking.
