Full, feathery and properly lush. The Boston Fern is a houseplant classic, loved for its masses of soft green fronds that arch outwards and create that instant indoor-jungle look.
Perfect for a plant stand, shelf or hanging pot, it likes a little more attention than some of our easy-going houseplants - mainly when it comes to moisture and humidity - but keep those two things right and it’ll reward you with loads of fresh growth.
Plant Care
- Light: Prefers bright, indirect light but will tolerate a slightly shadier spot. Keep away from strong direct sunshine.
- Watering: Keep the soil consistently lightly moist, without leaving it waterlogged. Boston Ferns really don't enjoy completely drying out.
- Temperature: Happiest around 16–24°C. Keep away from cold draughts and hot radiators.
- Humidity: Loves humidity. Bathrooms and kitchens can be brilliant spots, or give it a little extra humidity in drier rooms.
- Feed: Feed with a diluted houseplant fertiliser every 4–6 weeks during spring and summer.

How not to kill your Boston Fern (Nephrolepis)
We've created a personalised Grow Guide for your Boston Fern (Nephrolepis). Just follow this easy guide and you & your new leafy mate will be loving life together!
I'm a Thirsty Kirsty! I could drink most other plants under the table and still throw shapes on the dancefloor. Don't let me dry out or there'll be trouble, but remember, the art of drinking is slow & steady. Too much, too quick isn't good for any of us. Keep my soil moist but not soggy.
Humidity: High
Ooh, I love a bit of atmosphere! That's why you'd always find me in the bathroom at parties ;-) I think my favourite karaoke song would be 'Spritz Me Baby, One More Time' or maybe 'Come Up and Spritz Me (Make Me Smile)'. I'm sure you get the gist.
Light: Indirect
I'm pretty flexible, actually. Generally I'd rather be in a bright spot, with plenty of indirect light. But if all you've got is a moderately shady corner, that's no biggie I'll happily adapt with perhaps a bit less watering. Just keep me out of any harsh, direct sun and we'll get on just fine.
