Dark, velvety and a bit of a show-off.

The Black Gold Philodendron is one of those plants you can't help but stop and admire. Its gorgeous, heart-shaped leaves have a rich, almost black-green velvet finish, with striking golden veins that catch the light beautifully. New leaves often emerge with warm bronze tones before deepening into that signature dark green.

And here's where it gets interesting. This tropical climber can develop seriously impressive foliage as it matures, with leaves becoming longer and more dramatic when given something to climb.

A little bit fancy? Absolutely. Worth the attention? Every bit.

Plant Care

  • Light: Loves bright, indirect light. Avoid harsh direct sunshine, which can scorch its delicate, velvety leaves.
  • Watering: Allow the top few centimetres of compost to dry between waterings. Keep lightly moist during active growth, but never waterlogged.
  • Temperature: Happiest around 18–27°C. Keep away from cold draughts and temperatures below 15°C.
  • Humidity: Appreciates higher humidity, ideally around 60% or above. A humidifier can help keep those gorgeous leaves looking their best.
  • Feed: Feed every 4–6 weeks during spring and summer with a diluted, balanced houseplant fertiliser.

Good To Know

Bright, Indirect Light

Loves being in the spotlight. Thrives on attention. Just not direct sunlight, that’s where it draws the line. We’re glowing, not grilling.

Not for Pets or Kids

Beautiful but with a dark side. The leaves and/or other parts of this plant can be toxic. Keep away from pets, children and adults who never grew up.

How not to kill your Black Gold Philodendron (Philodendron melanochrysum)

We've created a personalised Grow Guide for your Black Gold Philodendron (Philodendron melanochrysum). Just follow this easy guide and you & your new leafy mate will be loving life together!

Light: Indirect

I'm pretty flexible, actually. Generally I'd rather be in a bright spot, with plenty of indirect light. But if all you've got is a moderately shady corner, that's no biggie I'll happily adapt with perhaps a bit less watering. Just keep me out of any harsh, direct sun and we'll get on just fine.

Humidity: Normal

Atmospherics? I'm really not that bothered, actually. Just your everyday household humidity is fine. No extra attention required, thanks, so don't be comin' at me with that spritzer!

Watering: Regular

I'm a Thirsty Kirsty! I could drink most other plants under the table and still throw shapes on the dancefloor. Don't let me dry out or there'll be trouble, but remember, the art of drinking is slow & steady. Too much, too quick isn't good for any of us. Keep my soil moist but not soggy.

Memento Top Tip 💡

Want those enormous, velvety leaves you see on mature Black Gold Philodendrons? Give yours something to climb!

A moss pole or climbing support encourages the plant to grow upwards and develop larger foliage over time. Keep it somewhere warm with good humidity, and be patient — those impressive mature leaves don't happen overnight.

And a little warning: those gorgeous velvet leaves are best admired without too much handling. They're surprisingly delicate!
