Small traps, very particular water.

This carnivorous plant catches small insects using its hinged leaves. It needs strong light, mineral-poor water and a cooler winter rest rather than the usual tropical houseplant routine.

Meet Your Plant

  • Botanical name: Dionaea muscipula
  • Foliage: Rosette of leaves ending in hinged traps
  • Growth: Compact carnivorous perennial with a seasonal resting period
  • Pet safety: Generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs. Keep plants out of reach to discourage chewing.

Plant Care

  • Light: Strong light and a sunny position. Acclimatise gradually and protect from excessive heat through glass.
  • Watering: Use rainwater or distilled water. Keep the growing medium wet during active growth; reduce water in the winter rest without letting it dry out.
  • Humidity: Moist growing medium matters more than routine misting.
  • Temperature: Provide a cooler, bright winter resting period rather than keeping it in a continuously heated room all year.
  • Feed: Do not use houseplant fertiliser or feed meat. Let it catch small live insects naturally.

What You Get

One living plant in the selected option. Leaf shape, colour and overall size vary naturally.

Good To Know

Bright, Indirect Light

Loves being in the spotlight. Thrives on attention. Just not direct sunlight, that’s where it draws the line. We’re glowing, not grilling.

Not for Pets or Kids

Beautiful but with a dark side. The leaves and/or other parts of this plant can be toxic. Keep away from pets, children and adults who never grew up.

How not to kill your Venus Flytrap (Dionaea muscipula)

We've created a personalised Grow Guide for your Venus Flytrap (Dionaea muscipula). Just follow this easy guide and you & your new leafy mate will be loving life together!

Light: Indirect

Choose a bright position with filtered or indirect light. Protect from harsh direct summer sun. Only use lower light where the individual plant’s care profile says it is tolerated.

Watering: Moderate

Check the compost before watering. Water when the upper layer begins to dry, then let excess water drain away. Adjust to the plant, pot, light and season.

Humidity: Normal

Atmospherics? I'm really not that bothered, actually. Just your everyday household humidity is fine. No extra attention required, thanks, so don't be comin' at me with that spritzer!

Memento Top Tip

Do not trigger traps for fun. Give it a cooler, bright winter rest and do not mistake seasonal dieback for a dead plant.
