Pearls, but make them fancy.

The Variegated String of Pearls takes one of our favourite trailing succulents and gives it a gorgeous little upgrade. Its delicate, bead-like leaves are marbled with creamy white and soft green, sometimes developing a subtle blush of pink when grown in bright light.

Those beautiful pearl-covered stems tumble over the edges of hanging pots and shelves, creating a cascading display that's every bit as unusual as it looks. A little more particular than its all-green cousin, but absolutely worth making room for.

And yes, those pearls are real leaves. Clever, isn't it?

Plant Care

  • Light: Loves plenty of bright, indirect light, with a little gentle morning sunshine. Good light helps maintain its beautiful variegation, but avoid prolonged harsh afternoon sun.
  • Watering: Allow the compost to dry out thoroughly between waterings. Its pearl-shaped leaves store water, making overwatering its biggest enemy.
  • Temperature: Happiest around 18–24°C. Protect from cold draughts, frost and temperatures below 10°C.
  • Humidity: Normal household humidity is ideal. No misting or extra humidity required.
  • Feed: Feed sparingly with a diluted cactus and succulent fertiliser during spring and summer.

Good To Know

Bright, Indirect Light

Loves being in the spotlight. Thrives on attention. Just not direct sunlight, that’s where it draws the line. We’re glowing, not grilling.

Not for Pets or Kids

Beautiful but with a dark side. The leaves and/or other parts of this plant can be toxic. Keep away from pets, children and adults who never grew up.

How not to kill your Variegated Pearls (Curio rowleyanus)

We've created a personalised Grow Guide for your Variegated Pearls (Curio rowleyanus). Just follow this easy guide and you & your new leafy mate will be loving life together!

Light: Indirect

Choose a bright position with filtered or indirect light. Protect from harsh direct summer sun. Only use lower light where the individual plant’s care profile says it is tolerated.

Watering: Moderate

Check the compost before watering. Water when the upper layer begins to dry, then let excess water drain away. Adjust to the plant, pot, light and season.

Humidity: Normal

Atmospherics? I'm really not that bothered, actually. Just your everyday household humidity is fine. No extra attention required, thanks, so don't be comin' at me with that spritzer!

Top tips from our Agony Plant.

Memento Top Tip

Light needs to reach the crown too. A bright shelf with a dark pot top can leave the strands growing while the centre becomes sparse.
