Calathea Ornata 🌿

With its glossy, deep green leaves striped in delicate pink, the Calathea Ornata is a total show-off, and we’re here for it. Native to the tropical forests of South America, this beauty brings all the rainforest drama without the diva behaviour (mostly).

It’s part of the prayer plant family, meaning its leaves gently fold up at night, yes, she’s spiritual and stunning. A lush pick for bathrooms, bedrooms or anywhere you want a hit of glam greenery.

Plant Care

Light: Bright, indirect light is best. Avoid direct sun, it’ll bleach the stripes.
Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but never soggy. Water when the top inch feels dry.
Temperature: Loves it warm, aim for 18–24°C. Keep away from cold draughts or radiators.
Humidity: High humidity is key. Mist regularly or place near a humidifier or in a steamy bathroom.
Feed: Use a diluted liquid houseplant feed every 4–6 weeks during growing season (spring/summer).

Good to Know

Air Purifying: Helps clean the air while looking cute.
Pet Friendly: Yes! Non-toxic to cats and dogs.
Also Known As: Pinstripe Calathea, Calathea Ornata.
Origin: Native to Colombia and Venezuela.

Good To Know

Pet Friendly

This is a leafy lover for everyone; cats, dogs and kids, even pet goats if that's your thing.

Not a Diva

Nothing special on this leafy star's rider. Happy just to get on with life and do it's thing, like an old friend just hangin' out.

Air Purifying

These plants help create a fresher and healthier environment by filtering out airborne toxins, and converting them to oxygen. Bonus!

How not to kill your Calathea Ornata 'Pinstripe Plant'

We've created a personalised Grow Guide for your Calathea Ornata 'Pinstripe Plant'. Just follow this easy guide and you & your new leafy mate will be loving life together!

Surviving

Light: Direct

I love the light! A big ol' dose of bright, sunlight each day is my idea of heaven. I'm even up for some direct rays, just as long as it's not a scorcher. That said, I'm pretty adaptable. If light or dappled shade is all you've got, I won't complain.

Humidity: High

Ooh, I love a bit of atmosphere! That's why you'd always find me in the bathroom at parties ;-) I think my favourite karaoke song would be 'Spritz Me Baby, One More Time' or maybe 'Come Up and Spritz Me (Make Me Smile)'. I'm sure you get the gist.

Watering: Moderate

I'm a Moderate Molly! Not one for necking my drinks and shouting out for more, I'm much more about nursing mine and savouring every last drop. A gentle top-up once a week should be just fine for me, thanks.

Thriving

Calatheas are all about vibes. They hate harsh light, dry air, and inconsistent watering. Find a cosy, warm spot with filtered light and keep the humidity high — it’ll reward you with striking leaves and steady growth.

Memento Top Tip

Use filtered or rainwater if you can — Calatheas are sensitive to fluoride and chlorine in tap water, and yellow or crispy leaf edges are usually their way of throwing shade.
