Candy floss, ballgowns, full drama - peonies don’t arrive quietly, they make an entrance!
They show up tight, unassuming… then within a few days? Absolute chaos in the best way. Big, blousy, ruffled heads taking over whatever room they land in. And honestly, that’s exactly why we love them!
If you’ve ever wondered what the hype is about (or why people panic-buy them every year), here’s the lowdown.

What Actually Are Peonies?
Peonies are one of the most loved flowers in the world, and not just because they’re easy on the eye.
They’ve been around for centuries, popping up in everything from Greek mythology to Chinese royal gardens. In China, they were literally called “the most beautiful”, not subtle, but also not wrong.
They grow across Asia, Europe, and North America, but the varieties you’re seeing in bouquets today? A lot of that comes from old-school French growers who knew exactly what they were doing.
Big blooms. Strong stems. Built to impress.
The Ones You’ll Actually See (and firm favs!)

We’re not listing 40 varieties like a gardening manual, here’s the ones that matter when you’re picking flowers in Belfast:
- Sarah Bernhardt – The classic. Big, soft, and always a safe bet
- Coral Charm / Coral Sunset – Starts bold, softens as it opens. Bit of a show-off
- Jules Elie – Strong scent, fuller head, proper lush
- Duchesse De Nemours – Fluffy, over-the-top, wedding energy
- Red Charm – Deep, rich, and hard to ignore
Truth is, we shake it each week, so we work with what’s freshly cut from the growers and on rotation as we love a bit of change!
Why Everyone Buys Them
Peonies aren’t just nice to look at, they mean something. They’ve always been tied to:
- Romance
- Good fortune
- A bit of luxury without saying it out loud
That’s why they show up everywhere from weddings to “just because” bouquets.
Or, more honestly… They’re just deadly looking and people love them!
The Bit No One Tells You
They don’t arrive looking like the photos. Peonies come in tight buds, small, a bit underwhelming if you don’t know what you’re looking at. Give them a couple of days and they completely transform.

When they arrive with you, some might be tight, or as we call them 'wee bullets! If they are being stubborn and won't open, follow these handy steps
Warm Water Soak: Cut stems diagonally, removing any leaves that would be below the waterline, and place them into a vase of warm (not hot) water.
Dunk the Blooms: To remove sticky sap holding the bud shut, dip the peony heads into a bucket of warm water and gently twist or swirl them.
Remove Guard Petals: If the bud is particularly stubborn, gently peel back the dark, outer, stiff petals (guard petals).
Result: Full. Open. Massive. Its half the fun!
Our Top Tips for your Peonies
Keep them in fresh water and trim the stems every couple of days
Don’t stick them beside a radiator unless you want them to blow in 24 hours
Keep out of direct sunlight, otherwise blink and they've bloomed!
Let them open naturally - that’s when they look their best
If they’re being stubborn wee bullets, follow out tips above

Short Season, Big Demand
Here’s the catch, peony season is blink and you’ll miss it.
In the UK & Ireland, you’re looking at:
👉 Late April – early July
That’s it. Once they’re gone, they’re gone. No restocks, no second chances.
Which is why every year turns into a bit of a scramble when they land.
