The Ficus Robusta,  better known as the Rubber Plant — is the definition of low-maintenance luxury. With its glossy, deep green leaves and strong upright form, it brings instant polish and calm to any room. Native to Southeast Asia, this plant has earned its place as a design classic, simple, sculptural, and quietly dramatic.

It’s an easy one to love and even easier to care for, thriving on a bit of routine and plenty of bright, indirect light.

Plant Care

Light: Loves bright, indirect light but can handle some soft morning or late afternoon sun. Avoid harsh midday rays that can scorch the leaves.
Watering: Water when the top few inches of soil are dry. It’s happier slightly under-watered than too soggy — drainage is key.
Temperature: Prefers a steady 15–25°C. Keep it away from cold draughts or direct heat sources.
Humidity: Tolerates normal home humidity but enjoys an occasional mist or a wipe-down to keep those leaves glossy.
Feed: A balanced houseplant fertiliser every 4–6 weeks during spring and summer will keep it thriving.

Good to Know

Air Purifying: Great for removing toxins and improving air quality.
Growth: Fast-growing in the right light — can reach impressive indoor heights.
Toxicity: Mildly toxic if ingested, so keep out of reach of pets and children.
Also Known As: Rubber Plant, Indian Rubber Tree.
Origin: Native to the tropical forests of India and Southeast Asia.

Good To Know

Shade Tolerant

This one's a bit of shady character. Doesn't seek the spotlight. Just as happy hanging out in shadowy spots (where all the hot goss happens).

Not a Diva

Nothing special on this leafy star's rider. Happy just to get on with life and do it's thing, like an old friend just hangin' out.

Not for Pets or Kids

Beautiful but with a dark side. The leaves and/or other parts of this plant can be toxic. Keep away from pets, children and adults who never grew up.

How not to kill your Ficus Elastica 'Robusta'

We've created a personalised Grow Guide for your Ficus Elastica 'Robusta'. Just follow this easy guide and you & your new leafy mate will be loving life together!

Surviving

Light: Indirect

I'm pretty flexible, actually. Generally I'd rather be in a bright spot, with plenty of indirect light. But if all you've got is a moderately shady corner, that's no biggie I'll happily adapt with perhaps a bit less watering. Just keep me out of any harsh, direct sun and we'll get on just fine.

Humidity: Normal

Atmospherics? I'm really not that bothered, actually. Just your everyday household humidity is fine. No extra attention required, thanks, so don't be comin' at me with that spritzer!

Watering: Regular

I'm a Thirsty Kirsty! I could drink most other plants under the table and still throw shapes on the dancefloor. Don't let me dry out or there'll be trouble, but remember, the art of drinking is slow & steady. Too much, too quick isn't good for any of us. Keep my soil moist but not soggy.

Thriving

Keep it somewhere bright and steady — this plant doesn’t love change. Turn it occasionally to encourage even growth, and wipe the leaves to keep them dust-free and shiny. It’ll reward you with strong, upright growth and an effortlessly sleek look.

Memento Top Tip

If your rubber plant starts to drop leaves, don’t panic — it’s just adjusting to a change in light or temperature. Give it consistency, a good clean drink, and a bit of patience. It’s the strong, silent type.
