Venus Fly Trap (Dionaea muscipula) 🪰🌱
The ultimate houseplant with attitude. Native to the wetlands of the United States, the Venus Fly Trap is a carnivorous plant that lures, snaps shut, and digests flies and other small insects with its iconic toothed traps. A natural solution to flying pests — and a fascinating addition to any plant collection.
Â
Plant Care
- Light: Thrives in bright, direct sunlight. A sunny windowsill is ideal.
- Watering: Keep soil consistently damp using distilled or rainwater only — never tap water. The soil should never fully dry out.
- Temperature: Prefers 15–30°C in the growing season. Can tolerate cooler temps in winter dormancy.
- Humidity: Enjoys higher humidity but will adapt to normal household levels if kept moist.
- Feed: No fertiliser needed. The plant gains nutrients from catching insects. Do not force-feed or trigger traps unnecessarily.
Â
Good to Know
- Dormancy: Requires a winter dormancy (cooler, less light, reduced watering).
- Traps: Each trap can only close a few times before dying off and being replaced.
- Fascination Factor: Great for kids (and adults) to observe — just don’t poke the traps for fun.
- Also Known As: Dionaea muscipula.
- Origin: Native to North and South Carolina, USA.
